In the coming years, thousands of homes will be built in Hoofddorp. This calls for a future-proof bicycle network that encourages sustainable mobility. The current bike path along the Hoofdvaart canal is insufficient for the growing demand. A high-quality bicycle connection is needed between Park21, Lincoln Park and the city center and station area.

The municipality of Haarlemmermeer is on the eve of a large-scale spatial transformation, with the construction of at least 20.000 new homes until 2040 in Hoofddorp, Nieuw-Vennep and Lisserbroek, among others. This growth brings with it a significant increase in mobility needs, with bicycles playing a crucial role in achieving a sustainable, healthy and accessible living environment.

This project focuses on the exploration of a high-quality bicycle connection between Park21, Lincolnpark and the Town Center/Stations area of Hoofddorp. The current infrastructure, such as the bike path along the Hoofdvaart canal, does not meet future demands in terms of capacity, immediacy and quality. Therefore, a new, future-proof route is sought that overcomes barriers such as rail lines, waterways and highways, and creates a cohesive network that connects to existing and new residential and commercial areas.

The study will map and evaluate multiple route options through a multicriteria-analysis (MCA), including input from residents and business owners. The goal is to identify a preferred route that optimizes accessibility, livability and safety for cyclists. The results form the basis for further elaboration and design of a robust bicycle connection that contributes to CO2 reduction, health and making cycling more attractive as an alternative to the car for distances up to 15 kilometers.

Together with residents, possible routes were explored. During the participation sessions, 360° sketches were used that residents could view in Virtual Reality viewers. This made it clear to residents at an early stage what the spatial integration of the bicycle route could look like.

PosadMaxwan worked on the design quality, landscaping, shade, greenery and integration of a square and public spaces.

During participatory sessions with residents, various integration options were presented as modular building blocks, allowing residents to construct the cycle route themselves. The complexity and cost of each option was also made explicit.
